A recent study reveals that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
